Today, we recognize Guatemala’s Independence Day and reflect upon the longstanding bilateral relationship between our countries built on shared values and an indelible bond among our peoples.
As I noted on the 20th anniversary of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, “democracy is fragile, and the people of the Americas must remain vigilant to protect it.”
We again congratulate Bernardo Arévalo on his election by the Guatemalan people as the country’s next president, as confirmed by the August 28 vote result certification. At the same time, the United States remains concerned regarding anti-democratic actions that undercut the will of the Guatemalan people.
On this 202nd anniversary of independence, the United States stands in solidarity with the Guatemalan people as they strive to uphold the democratic principles enshrined in their constitution.
