Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to Hold Quarterly Meeting at American University in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Department of State announced today that the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board will hold its quarterly meeting on September 26, 2023, at American University in Washington, D.C.  The board will welcome a new member, meet with university officials, students, and scholars, and speak with the current Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows at American University, whose exchange is part of the Fulbright Program.  Of the 12 fellows on campus, a panel of three hailing from Brazil, Pakistan, and South Africa will discuss their studies and work in law and human rights.

The Board will also hear from American University President Sylvia Burwell on the value of international education in civil society.  Dr. Burwell is the first woman to serve as president of American University and was the Secretary of Health and Human Services and Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Barack Obama.  In addition, Roger Fairfax, Dean of American University Washington College of Law at American University, will speak to the Board.  The Washington College of Law is hosting the Humphrey Fellows for this academic year.

The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board consists of 12 presidentially appointed members who supervise the Fulbright Program and select participants both from the United States and abroad for Fulbright exchanges.  The Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Chair, Donna Brazile, and Vice Chair, Michael Trager, conduct quarterly meetings to enable Board members to discuss Fulbright Program policies and meet program participants.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program, and aims to increase mutual understanding and foster friendly, peaceful relations between the people of the United States and those of other countries.  The program annually supports more than 8,000 students, scholars, artists, and professionals from the United States and more than 160 countries in their exchange.
