Counselor Derek Chollet and USAID Assistant Administrator Michael Schiffer met today with the leadership team of the Burma “National Unity Government” (NUG), including NUG-designated Acting President Duwa Lashi La NUG-designated Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung, and other leaders.
Counselor Chollet welcomed the NUG’s efforts toward inclusive and representative democratic governance in Burma. The Counselor underscored U.S. support for the pro-democracy movement, including efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to millions in need and build local administrative capacity to provide vital public services. The Counselor commended the NUG on efforts to build inclusive coalitions with those striving for a democratic future in Burma, including key ethnic and religious groups, particularly Rohingya. The Counselor and the NUG leaders reiterated the urgency of pressing the military regime to end violence, release those unjustly detained, and engage in dialogue with all stakeholders to promote an end to the conflict and a path toward democracy in the interests of the people of Burma.
