Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell met today with Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Dr. Kao Kim Hourn during the Secretary-General’s inaugural trip to Washington, D.C., where he will engage with public and private stakeholders.
Deputy Secretary Campbell and Secretary-General Kao discussed ongoing efforts to implement the ASEAN-U.S. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, building on outcomes from the 36th ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue in Washington. The Deputy Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ support for ASEAN centrality and the principles and objectives of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.
Both Deputy Secretary Campbell and Secretary-General Kao underscored support for Lao PDR’s ASEAN chair year. They also discussed a range of regional and global issues of mutual importance to the United States and ASEAN.
