Representatives from Algeria, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Qatar, Türkiye, the UAE, the UK, the UN, and the United States held informal consultations yesterday, with participation of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily, focused on promoting the political consensus needed for successful Libyan elections. Participants expressed their solidarity with the Libyan people following the devastating flooding in eastern Libya and noted the urgency of enhanced coordination among Libyan and international parties to ensure an effective and transparent humanitarian response. In remarks to the group, Assistant Secretary Barbara A. Leaf underscored full U.S. support for Special Representative Bathily’s efforts and stressed the need for a renewed international commitment to advancing the UN-led political process, including to urge finalizing the draft election law and to support Special Representative Bathily’s efforts to convene key Libyan stakeholders to galvanize the electoral track through a political agreement.
