On behalf of the United States, I extend best wishes and solidarity to the people of Burma as you mark Thingyan, Burma’s New Year.
Thingyan is a time for reflection, as well as an opportunity to look ahead toward a new year. Unfortunately, this past year Burma continued to witness violence committed against civilians and the repression of human rights. The military regime’s decision to implement conscription only adds to the significant anxiety and hardship faced by the people of Burma.
We will continue to support all those seeking an end to the crisis and striving for an inclusive, democratic future for Burma. We remain committed to international efforts to promote accountability for the regime’s coup and its abuses against civilians. The people of Burma have repeatedly demonstrated tremendous courage and resilience in the face of unimaginable suffering.
Despite the current conflict, may Thingyan’s spirit of renewal bring new hope to the people of Burma.
